Sustainable health system

The Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences (SAMS) and the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences (SAGW) have for a number of years been discussing the question of how the health system can be developed sustainably. The debate must go far beyond specialist circles, as it is a social challenge to define a health care system that will offer future generations affordable and satisfactory medical services.

Rising demand, limited resources

It is clear that the resources required by the health system in its current form are not available to an unlimited extent. As with the environment, questions of sustainability therefore also arise here.  The Academies are following these issues intensively and recently the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences (SAMS) published a position paper on the subject (2019).

publifocus “Costs and benefits of medical services”

A publifocus is a participatory method in which citizens come together in discussion groups and talk about technologies that they themselves use or are involved with in their work. The aim of this format is to foster a dialogue between the public, science and politics. As part of the Swiss Academies’ “Sustainable Health System” project, TA SWISS conducted the publifocus "Usefulness and Costs of Medical Treatments" in 2011/2012. Citizens discuss questions concerning the distribution of medical resources or the value and benefits of medical services.

You will find more about the topic on the TA SWISS website.
