More effective Academies following a re-organization

The Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences (a+) have repositioned themselves in an organizational development process.Organized as a federal union and endowed with bodies that work effectively, the Swiss Academies build bridges between science and politics, society and business. At its meeting today, the Federal Council approved the corresponding partial revision of the a+ Statutes.
Scientific policy advice in crises

The institutions in the fields of education, research and innovation (ERI) welcome the implementation proposal for the involvement of scientific advisory bodies in crises, which the Federal Council has approved. With this, instruments were created that will enable scientific expertise to be incorporated into the management of future crises as quickly as possible. Processes and a clear division of roles between science and politics were predefined.
Adriano Rutz wins the Swiss National ORD Prize

Dr. Adriano Rutz, a Postdoc at ETH Zurich, wins the first National Prize for Open Research Data (ORD) for “The LOTUS Initiative” project. LOTUS explores new ways of promoting the re-use of data in the fields of biology and chemistry and thus of sharing knowledge in natural products research.
Marcel Tanner is awarded the 2023 Brandenberger Prize

The Dr. J.E. Brandenberger Foundation has awarded this year’s Brandenberger Prize to Marcel Tanner, President of the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences. With the award, it acknowledges Marcel Tanner’s valuable contribution to fostering the dialogue between science and politics.
How iodine got into salt: the 2023 Prix Média is awarded to Jonah Goodman

They solved a major problem in our country – and yet they were probably unknown to most people until now: 100 years ago, three country doctors delivered Switzerland from goitre by adding iodine to table salt. Journalist Jonah Goodman delved into the archives to bring this unknown chapter of Swiss history to light and wins this year’s Prix Média for his reportage in “Das Magazin”. It is endowed with CHF 10,000.
ERI Dispatch 2025-2028: Universities and funding organisations for research and innovation fear cutback in services

The Federal Council plans to invest less than before in education, research and innovation (ERI) in the coming years. In its ERI Dispatch 2025–2028, the Federal Council proposes only a slight nominal growth for the ERI sector. Due to the expected inflation, a zero or negative growth is possible in real terms. A cutback in services at the ERI institutions concerned is therefore foreseeable. The universities and research and innovation promotion organisations are therefore calling for significant, real growth for the entire HERI sector over the next four-year period. Only in this way can they continue to make their contribution to progress and prosperity in Switzerland.
Swiss Academies call for secure funding for their core tasks

The Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences emphatically demand, in their statement on the ERI Dispatch 2025-2028, that the financing of their core tasks be secured in the upcoming funding period as well. The Federal Council’s ambitious goals, which are set out in the ERI Dispatch, can hardly be achieved with the Academies’ proposed funding.

In der Botschaft Internationale Zusammenarbeit 2025-28 fehle eine Strategie für die Zusammenarbeit mit der Wissenschaft zur Nutzung und Förderung wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse, kritisieren Expertinnen und Experten der Kommission für Forschungspartnerschaften mit Entwicklungsländern in ihrer Stellungnahme.

Quattro studentesse della Scuola universitaria professionale di Lucerna (HSLU) hanno deciso di mettere in pratica le loro idee e di lanciare la start-up Publicellar. Grazie al contributo del programma U Change delle Accademie svizzere delle scienze, esse si trovano adesso nella fase di concezione del prodotto: il noleggio di utensili e accessori disponibili in armadietti situati sul campus della loro scuola universitaria. L'attuale bando è aperto fino al 31 ottobre 2023.

This new prize aims to recognize researchers for innovative practices in the field of Open Research Data (ORD) and aims to promote the transition to open research practices. Applications are open until August 31, 2023.

A new publication by the Swiss Young Academy provides practical tips, insights and background information on the legislative process. This orientation guide is intended to enable (young) scientists to successfully contribute their knowledge to parliamentary deliberations.
Five new members for the Swiss Young Academy

On 1 May 2023 the Board of Directors of the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences elected five new members to the Swiss Young Academy (SYA). With this election, the Academies acknowledge the ideas and commitment of the newly-elected members at the interfaces between science, society and politics. The newly-admitted scientists and academics will be able to implement innovative, inter- and transdisciplinary project ideas over the next five years jointly with the other 34 members.

Change in the Presidency of the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences

After more than three years at the helm of the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences, Prof. Dr Marcel Tanner is handing over the presidency to Prof. Dr Yves Flückiger, Rector of the University of Geneva. He will take up his new post in January 2024.

La BNE Fabrik offre a insegnanti e specialisti-e: materiali didattici, metodi di insegnamento adeguati, formazione continua e possibilità di scambio tra le diverse aree tematiche. Il progetto è stato reso possibile anche grazie al programma di finanziamento U Change. Questo programma sostiene i progetti studenteschi sullo sviluppo sostenibile e l'ESS. L'attuale bando per progetti è aperto fino al 30 aprile 2023.
Statement on the consultation on the “Horizon Fund Law”

The Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences welcome and support the draft law on the establishment of the “Horizon Fund”. This fund aims to secure the resources earmarked for the European Research and Innovation Framework Programme Horizon Europe for the benefit of research in Switzerland. This will at least minimise the loss for Switzerland as a centre of knowledge as a result
